I. Non-Human Environmental Variables: Living Organisms and Air Interference
In an open workspace, active animals (such as cats) do not participate directly in the painting process. However, by altering the surrounding air and spatial conditions, they indirectly affect how materials behave.
1. Indirect Entry of Physical Objects
- Liquid and Fluid Materials: Before alcohol inks or fluid acrylics dry completely, their exposed wet surfaces act like traps for airborne dust and shedding hair. A less obvious pathway is tools: small mixing cups, pipettes, and air nozzles on blowers often carry airborne particles prior to use, transferring them into the liquid when poured or blown.
- Open Exposure Stages: When scooping dry pigment powder, stirring in binders, or grinding paint, opening the container allows air currents stirred up by animal activity to carry fine dust into the paint paste.
- Solid and Tacky Surfaces: Oil pastel sticks have a naturally tacky surface that easily catches fallen hairs and carries them onto the paper during strokes. Removing or leaving the hair represents a spatial displacement of an external object; the intrinsic texture and body of the pastel stick itself remain unchanged.

Scent does not directly alter the structural makeup of paint. Instead, it acts on the painter’s senses, indirectly shaping the final picture through a distinct chain of events:
- Alcohol-Based Materials: These evaporate rapidly and carry a strong smell. The potent odor often triggers an automatic physical dodge—leaning back, stepping away, or losing hand precision. - Pigment Powders and Aged Liquid Paints: Sensitivity to smell varies from person to person. Transparency is not a fixed, permanent label for a paint. It shifts dynamically depending on added water, medium dilution, layer thickness, and wet-to-dry state:
- Alcohol Ink: Ranks highest on the transparency scale, staying vivid and clear when applied thinly. However, adding metallic powders increases opacity significantly.
- Pigment Powder: Shows extreme opacity when stacked in a pile. Only when minute amounts stay suspended in liquid and spread thinly can the background show through.
- Pan Watercolors: Solid paint cakes are hard and opaque in the pan. Once activated with water and thinned onto paper, transparency appears, relying heavily on the paper’s underlying brightness.
- Acrylic Paint: Shows high coverage straight out of the tube. Adding water or large amounts of clear medium turns it into a semi-transparent layer. Colors darken slightly once fully dry.
- Oil Pastels: Ranks lowest in transparency. The paste has strong coverage and leaves a heavy, built-up texture. Even when scraped or spread extremely thin, it only forms a semi-transparent, waxy barrier.
