Sound and Material Behavior: Direct Effects and Indirect Human Intervention

In long-term observations of various materials—including alcohol ink, powder pigments, handmade watercolors, acrylics, and oil pastels—sound is a continuously present environmental factor. Based on long-term records, sound has not shown any explicit effect capable of directly altering the physical state of these materials.

A more clear relationship appears on another level: sound is first perceived by the operator, and then indirectly enters the material behavior through the operator's attention, movement rhythm, and judgment.

When observing the relationship between sound and materials, two distinct sources must be divided:

  1. Internal Mechanical Sounds: Friction or scraping sounds produced by materials or tools during the process.
  2. External Environmental Sounds: Sounds originating from outside the material system, such as construction noise, ambulance sirens, phone ringtones, and animal activity.

The positions and action mechanisms of these two sources are distinctly different.

1. Alcohol and Alcohol Ink

  • Sealed Storage Stage: For alcohol or alcohol ink stored in sealed containers over long periods, no direct influence from external sounds on their state has been observed. Their evaporation rate, odor performance, and liquid form show no observable changes with variations in external sound.
  • Open Operation Stage: When ink is transferred from containers into an open environment, external sounds (such as sudden sirens, ringtones, or animal movement) act upon the operator. The operator may experience shifts in attention, movement pauses, trajectory shifts, or pace changes, which subsequently affect the distribution morphology of the ink indirectly. The logical path is: External Sound → Human Perception & Reaction → Changes in Operational Movement → Ink Behavior.
  • Formed Storage Stage: After artwork is formed and enters the long-term preservation stage, no direct effect of environmental sound on the final preservation results has been observed.

2. Powder Pigments and Packaging Process

  • Storage and Transition Stage: During long-term storage of pigments in powder form, external sound has not been observed to alter particle states. In the process of transforming from powder into liquid color paste (such as fetching, transferring, adding binders, and mixing), sound similarly shows no direct effect on pigment particles.
  • Packaging Stage: The flow, layering, surface changes, and subsequent solidifying phenomena of pigments during packaging show no direct changes due to environmental sounds. External sounds mainly enter the operational process indirectly by triggering physical reactions or brief pauses in the operator.

3. Pigment Grinding Process

The grinding stage presents specific sound characteristics:

  • Sound Source: Primarily originates from mechanical friction (such as scraping and pressing) between tools and pigments, as well as tools and grinding surfaces.
  • Direct Effect: The friction sound generated by grinding itself has not been observed to directly alter the particle state or final grinding result of the pigment.
  • Indirect Impact: Harsh or continuous friction sounds from grinding may affect the operator's physical perception and emotional state, prompting them to accelerate the grinding pace, alter applied force, or end the grinding process early. Such operational changes may influence the grinding process, but final particle quality cannot be directly attributed to the sound itself.

4. Watercolor Painting

  • Material Response: The color spreading, settling, paper absorption, and drying processes of solid watercolors after being activated by water primarily depend on basic physical conditions among the material, water, paper, and environment. External sounds have not been observed to directly alter these processes.
  • Human Intermediary Role: Continuous external noise (such as construction noise) or sudden sounds mainly affect the operator's focus and visual judgment. The operator may consequently pause painting, alter color-mixing habits, or adjust how the image is handled. The final visual presentation of the artwork is the result of changes in the operator's state, rather than sound directly altering the watercolor pigments.

5. Acrylics and Oil Pastels

  • Acrylic Systems: Whether with regular acrylics, acrylics with mediums, or fluid acrylic systems, external sounds have shown no direct impact on flowing, mixing, or drying behavior. Tool sounds produced by stirring or scraping also show no direct effect on the material itself, connecting primarily by influencing the operator's attention.
  • Oil Pastel Systems: As solid materials, oil pastels do not change their physical state due to environmental sounds. Friction sounds occurring when using palette knives or scraping tools are accompanying phenomena of mechanical contact. This friction sound has not been observed to directly alter the material performance of oil pastels; its main role remains being perceived by humans, thereby subtly affecting hand operations.

6. Objective Relationship Between Sound and Final Preservation Results

Judging from long-term preservation records, external sound itself has not produced any visually observable impact on final alcohol ink artwork, solidified watercolors, dried acrylics, or oil pastel works. No direct causal relationship has been established between sound and the final stable state of the materials.

Summary

Within the material behavior systems described above, sound has a clear structural division:

  1. Friction Sounds Generated by Materials and Tools: Belong to accompanying phenomena during the behavior process (Material Behavior → Accompanying Sound).
  2. External Environmental Sounds: Do not serve as direct control variables of material behavior; they act only as stimuli on humans, indirectly entering the process through human physical movements and judgment (External Sound → Human Perception & Movement → Material Behavior).

When observing and recording such material behaviors, the physical performance of the material itself and the operator's movement responses under environmental influences are two distinct levels that must be clearly separated and independently observed.
