In material behavior records, while dynamic processes in open spaces matter, the final colored visible state left on the substrate (referred to below as the "final result") serves as another core dimension of archiving.

This record is strictly limited to colored materials after active behavior ends, focusing on static attributes on the substrate such as visible marks, surface texture, thickness, sheen, and transparency. Colorless transparent liquids like water or clear alcohol are excluded.

The core objective is to distinguish between two concepts: "the material has presented a visible color result" versus "whether the physical and visual behavior of the material itself has completely stopped."

1. Specific Characteristics of Final Results Across Material Systems

1. Alcohol Ink

Alcohol ink forms a relatively definite, fixed trace.

  • Surface Texture & Sheen: The overall surface exhibits a slight plastic-like quality. Local sheen correlates directly with trace thickness; thicker areas show a relatively clear sheen with potential reflections.
  • Thickness & Transparency: Thicker areas present deeper color and higher opacity, visually approaching an opaque solid; thinner areas retain clear transparent or semi-transparent qualities.
  • Behavior Continuation: The result is permanent and irreversible. Without human intervention (such as using solvents to re-activate or remove it), the material itself produces no spontaneous structural changes. Any subsequent fading or flaking is an outcome of environmental contact, not a self-directed material behavior.

2. Dry Pigment Powder & Handcrafted Watercolor Paint

  • Dry Pigment Powder (Pure Powder State):
    Dry powder placed directly on substrates like paper undergoes no state transition.   • Definite Terminal Materials: For alcohol ink, acrylic paint, and dried watercolor paintings, presenting visible results coincides with the end of spontaneous material behavior. Once a solid surface forms, the material itself generates no further image structures. External environmental impacts (such as color shifts or flaking) represent external forces rather than spontaneous material behavior.
  • Conditional Terminal Materials (Oil Pastels): Presenting a visible color result does not mean oil pastel behavior has permanently ended. Without a sealing layer, its surface retains tackiness and remains open to re-activation by external forces.

In material archives, establishing a "final static state" for oil pastels depends on artificially applying a protective barrier film. This barrier alters contact conditions with the surrounding environment, establishing a definitive endpoint for preservation. Without a protective layer, the material remains in a state capable of being re-worked indefinitely.
