Gravity as an Environmental Condition and Locally Observable Expression in Material Behavior

The premise here is limited strictly to standard Earth gravity conditions. It explores the extent to which gravity can be identified as a component of material behavior when observing alcohol inks, pigment powders, watercolor paints, acrylic paints, and oil pastels.
Long-term observations show that gravity's level of visibility varies across different materials. While gravity is always present, this does not mean it acts as the primary factor driving morphological changes in materials at every stage. In some materials, gravity translates directly into directional movement and settling results; in others, it acts more as a background condition that keeps operations functional, with its specific effects coexisting alongside the material's state, surface conditions, and human operation.

1. Alcohol Ink: Directional Movement and Backflow in Open Space
When alcohol ink remains static inside a sealed container, gravity shows no observable morphological change. Once the ink leaves the container and enters open space, gravity's role manifests across several stages:
- Transfer Process: When transferring ink from its original container to another, or using a dropper to release it onto a surface material, the liquid exhibits flow characteristics moving from a higher to a lower position.
- Backflow Phenomenon: The ink possesses strong inherent dispersibility. During human intervention involving heat or airflow, noticeable backflow can be observed in areas where the liquid layer is thicker. As the external force weakens, the material shows a tendency to redistribute toward lower areas.
- Movement on Tilted Substrates: When the supporting substrate is tilted while the liquid remains fluid, the ink shows a directional tendency to move toward the lower end of the incline.
- Edge Runoff: When the ink is pushed to the edge of the substrate and crosses the boundary, the liquid flows downward along the edge and leaves the surface.
For alcohol ink, gravity exhibits identifiable effects in transfer, backflow, movement on tilted surfaces, and edge runoff.

2. Pigment Powder: Airborne Settling and Container Stability
Gravity presents different observable forms across various states of pigment powders:
- Powder Transfer and Settling: When powder is taken out of a container, some particles enter the target spot directly, while lighter and finer particles may temporarily become airborne. After a period of time, these suspended particles settle back down onto the tabletop or floor.
- Integration with Binders: When liquid binder is added, it seeps downward into the powder, and some lighter powder may briefly float upward. Trace amounts of powder escaping into the air during stirring ultimately settle downward again.
- Retention of Liquid Mixtures: Once turned into a liquid state, the pigment mixture stays inside the container and does not leave due to ordinary stirring. The liquid's inherent stickiness, the container walls, and gravity together keep the material within the container space.
- Grinding and Transfer: During the process of pouring material onto a grinding slab and recovering it back into the container after grinding, the liquid consistently flows from high to low under gravity. However, during active grinding under continuous human pressure, human force dominates, making gravity's visual presence relatively subtle.
- Pan-Filling and Layering: When liquid pigment is poured into watercolor pans, the material remains inside the pan. During layered filling, subsequent layers rest on top of previous ones; gravity holds the material within the designated space, providing a stable filling environment for solidifying.

3. Watercolor Paints: Structural Solidification and Painting Dispersion
From solidification to actual painting, gravity participates in watercolor paints as follows:
- Structural Changes During Solidification: As liquid turns into a solid state, the material remains under continuous gravitational force. After solidifying, certain colors exhibit surface dips, collapses, or height variations. These phenomena are formed by the combined interaction of pigment attributes, moisture loss, container shape, and gravity.
- Retention and Dispersion During Painting: Liquid staying on the palette surface and brush-washing water remaining inside its container are direct expressions of gravity acting as a background condition. In wet-on-wet painting (moistening the substrate before applying paint), water and pigment spread outward from thicker liquid areas. This process is influenced by paper absorbency, paint concentration, liquid thickness, and gravity together, with gravity contributing to the environmental conditions for liquid distribution.

4. Acrylics: Fluidity as the Decisive Factor for Gravity's Visibility
The visibility of gravity in acrylic paints is closely tied to whether the material possesses fluidity:
- Raw vs. Fluid State Differences: Unmixed raw acrylic paint has high viscosity and shows no obvious autonomous flow. When mixed with medium to achieve fluidity, pouring the liquid onto a substrate from a higher point causes it to move downward and spread outward in thicker areas until reaching a relatively stable coverage.
- Tilt-Guided Flow: When the supporting substrate is manually tilted, fluid acrylic moves in the direction of the incline to cover unpainted areas.
- Local Dips During Drying: On canvas or other flexible substrates without fully fixed backs, thick acrylic layers may undergo local height reductions or dips during drying. Substrate structure, coating thickness, and gravity coexist in the environment where this change occurs.

5. Oil Pastels: Acting as a Stable Operational Background
Oil pastels differ significantly from liquid materials:
- Absence of Autonomous Flow: Oil pastels remain solid at room temperature. Human force plays the decisive role during handling, applying, color mixing, and tool manipulation. Even when heavily layered, the material is not observed to autonomously spread sideways or run downward due to gravity like a liquid.
- Stability of Finished Works: When completed oil pastel artworks are stored vertically, surface materials show no downward slumping or running purely under gravity.
- Form of Gravitational Presence: In oil pastel usage, gravity primarily acts to provide a stable operating space free from weightlessness. Movement driven by gravity becomes directly observable only when the material loses physical support (such as dropping an oil pastel).

6. Summary: The Three-Tier Mechanism of Gravity's Participation
Based on long-term observations of these materials, gravity's participation mechanism can be divided into three distinct tiers:
- A Foundational Stable Background (Applies to all materials): Keeps materials, containers, and moisture inside their designated spaces, ensuring the operating environment is free from weightless drifting.
- A Settling Driver for Suspended Particles and Fluids (Powders and low-viscosity liquids): Causes airborne powders to settle back onto surfaces and drives low-viscosity liquids to flow directionally during transfers, substrate tilting, or edge overflows.
- A Structural Co-shaper alongside Multiple Variables (Solidification and drying processes): In alcohol ink backflow, watercolor solidification dips, wet-on-wet paint dispersion, and fluid acrylic spreading, gravity works together with surface tension, material viscosity, substrate absorbency, and human manipulation to determine final spatial distribution.

The differences in how gravity manifests across materials stem fundamentally from the material's physical state (solid, high-viscosity, fluid, powder) and the mode of human intervention, which together dictate whether gravity—as an ever-present background condition—becomes visually observable as distinct material behavior.
