Observation Archive on Material Behavior: Presence of Color and States of Transparency

In the practical observation of alcohol inks, powdered pigments, handmade watercolors, acrylics, and oil pastels, whether a material inherently contains color and how its transparency changes across different physical states present the following objective characteristics.

I. Color as an Observation Medium and the Physical Performance of Colorless States

  • Color Distribution of Physical Materials: Except for alcohol extenders and certain acrylic mediums, which exist as colorless and transparent liquids, all observed alcohol inks, powdered pigments, solid watercolor cakes, acrylic paints, and oil pastels naturally carry distinct colors. No colorless, transparent forms were observed among powdered pigments, solid watercolor cakes, or oil pastels.
  • Trace Retention of Colorless Transparent Media: When a colorless, transparent liquid (such as pure alcohol) flows over a non-absorbent surface, its dynamic movement can be observed in real time. However, once the flow and evaporation process ends without introducing color particles, no visible physical traces or static results remain on the surface, making later visual review impossible.
  • Positioning of External Media: Water is colorless and transparent, serving as an external participating medium in certain material behaviors. It functions as an operational medium rather than the material entity itself.

II. Changes in Transparency Across Different Physical States

The visual transparency of a material is not a single, fixed property; it changes depending on its physical state (accumulated, liquid, diluted, spread thin, or dried):

  • Alcohol Inks and Extenders: Extenders and most colored inks exhibit high visual transparency in their liquid state, allowing the underlying surface texture to remain visible. When an ink contains metallic powder particles, the coverage of the liquid layer increases, and visual transparency decreases accordingly.
  • Powdered Pigments: Pigments in an accumulated or heaped state appear completely opaque. Only when a tiny amount is thinly scattered and attached to a surface can a localized light-transmitting effect be perceived; as a whole, it remains an opaque collection of particles.
  • Liquid Color Pastes (Pigment and Binder Combinations): Even when mixed with binders that visually appear transparent or semi-transparent, the resulting liquid color paste remains opaque as a whole, with its visual appearance determined primarily by the pigment particles.
  • Solid Watercolor Paints: Solid watercolor cakes themselves are opaque, solid structures with no internal visibility. When activated with water and spread thin on a surface, the paint layer exhibits visual transparency. This transparency is influenced by pigment characteristics, binder proportions, water amount, and layer thickness; as the layer becomes thicker, the transparent effect diminishes.
  • Acrylic Paints and Mediums: Acrylic paints in their original containers (tubes or jars) appear thick, heavy, and highly opaque, with no transparent quality. When applied thinly to a surface or diluted with water, the layer shows localized visual transparency. Colorless, transparent acrylic mediums remain colorless and transparent after drying; they do not alter the inherent color of the acrylic paint and mainly allow the paint's own coverage and color characteristics to show.
  • Oil Pastels: Oil pastels display high coverage in both their solid form and during application, showing only a subtle semi-transparent feel when applied extremely thin. Their strong particle attachment keeps accumulation, scraping, and distribution marks clearly visible on the surface.

III. Observational Summary

The presence of color enables the movement and distribution processes of materials to form lasting, reviewable static visual traces. Transparency exists as a visual feature that changes dynamically according to physical states such as solid, liquid, diluted, spread thin, or dried.
